Firearms Training

I have been involved in firearms training since 2000.  I am a certified instructor for both the NRA and Idaho Hunter Education.   I also have 18 years of experience as an attorney including extensive experience and training in criminal law. 

Listed below you will find information about upcoming Hunter Education and handgun courses.  Along with courses that I offer as an instructor, I also assist with courses offered with other instructors where I provide legal instruction on self defense and firearms law. 

NRA Personal Protection Course

This course will meet the training criteria for the Idaho Enhanced Concealed Weapons License. 




This course also meets the training requirements for the Oregon Concealed Weapons Permit.

The NRA Personal Protection course is designed to teach the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense. 

This is at minimum an eight-hour course. Students should expect to shoot over 100 rounds of ammunition.  A fair estimate is 120 rounds.  Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development.

Primary topics of the course include:

  • Safety in handling firearms.  Safe storage of firearms and ammunition
  • Choosing firearms and ammunition
  • The choice of preparing for self defense with attention to mental preparation and decision-making
  • Levels of awareness and threat assessment
  • Defensive shooting fundamentals
  • Law:  including self-defense, potential criminal liability and potential civil liability.
  • Discussion of the use of lethal force in self defense.

Students will participate in a range exercise.  This will include use of shooting techniques designed to prepare persons for use of a handgun in self defense.  Students will be required to fire no less than 100 rounds of ammunition during the course of the range exercise.

Students must be over age 18 unless special permission is granted.  Note that persons under the age of 21 may not apply for an Idaho Enhanced Concealed Weapons License.


Items you will need for this course

DO NOT BRING ANY FIREARM OR AMMUNITION INTO THE FIRST CLASS SESSION.
You will be instructed when to bring firearms.  Have your handgun available for the range.   You will need these items during the course:
  • a Handgun suitable for personal protection.  Most people perform better with a good semi-automatic handgun and at least two magazines  Revolvers will not be permitted for the course unless specific permission is given.  This is primarily because of additional range time used by revolver shooters.  Students who wish to use a revolver will be required to pay a higher course fee of $130.  Participants should check with me if they wish to share a firearm among two students. 
  • about 120 rounds of ammunition for your handgun
  • it is preferred that you have a holster fitted to your strong side hip/belt
  • hearing protection such as ear plugs
  • eye protection or shooting glasses
  • there will be time for lunch on your own

    Be prepared for present weather conditions. 
    Water is highly recommended for the range.      Your shoes should be suitable for uneven ground in some of our range conditions.

The range portion of this course will be on Saturday afternoon.  Preregistration is required to ensure that there is adequate space for you and to ensure that you can receive course materials and certificates.

IDAHO HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE

The next hunter education course will begin Saturday a.m.  The second day of this class will be  beginning at 8:30 a.m.  Plan for class to run until 5:30 p.m. each day.  Students are responsible for their own lunches.  There will be a break for lunch each day.

This is an Idaho Hunter Education classroom course. There are fees with IDFG of  $9.75 for the course.  Your hunter education instructors serve on a volunteer basis.  Live fire will be available at the range for this event. 


This course is offered over two full Saturdays.  The schedule may be more convenient to many adults.  It is also a schedule that may be more difficult for pre-teen students or others who have difficulty giving the required attention during 2 full days.  Parents, please consider whether this schedule fits your child's needs and abilities.  I will provide an internet study source that may help students during the week between the two course sessions.
